Pausing for the Surprises

Picture this, I’m rushing home from work, walk in to get big hugs from kids who then seem get hangry at the mere sight of me, say goodbye to the sitter, run to change and I find a “Pwize” (surprise but she has trouble with “r”) on the bathroom counter from my three year old. It might seem like nothing but a penny and a quarter, but it made me stop everything and smile and realize how often I miss these little treasures.

Thinking of this, I set a challenge for myself, what does it look like to add 10 minutes to my evening routine to incorporate a “treasure.” This could look like picking wildflowers with my daughters (ok, maybe also some from the garden but she’s three, so she gets a pass) or sipping a glass of wine and soaking in the sunset from the deck. No matter, just doing something that will force me to engage in an activity that causes me to pause and enjoy my surroundings. Something that induces deep breaths of fresh air, enjoying nature, enjoying just being in that exact moment.

Taking this a step further, what does it look like to create a treasure for someone else? Thinking of my three year old, she thought of me and gave me something from her treasure chest (oddly this chest seems to always get filled with our loose change…) – her penny and quarter. What does it look like to create a special moment for someone else? My husband is really good at this – he’ll make my coffee, or leave a sweet note, all leaving me feel thought of and appreciated. How different would our world look if everyone showed some self appreciation and appreciation for others by creating a “moment” for ourselves and those around us. All this to say, take the challenge. Take 5-10 minutes and create a moment – for yourself or for someone else but just create a “treasure” or a “surprise” and see what happens.
